Upgrades to the 6.7L Powerstroke engine were added in the 2017 model year to further increase horsepower and torque. With the addition of these heavy-duty components, payload and towing capabilities of the Super Duty trucks increased. Along with the reinforced frame, Ford added heavier-duty drive shafts, axles and improved the 4-wheel-drive transfer case.
The fully-boxed frame constructed of 95% high-strength steel is designed to withstand heavier towing loads. Upgrading to an aluminum body created the potential of up to 700 lb in weight savings, even with the addition of a new heavy-duty frame and driveline components. One of the major modifications to the Super Duty trucks was switching to an aluminum-intensive body. In 2017, Ford completely redesigned the body styles on their Super Duty trucks, including modernized grilles and headlights.
